Jillo is Chief Court
Reporter and Weekend
News Editor of The Star newspaper in Nairobi.

Passionate about the promotion and protection
of human rights, she focuses on court cases and legal issues related to minority groups, such as intersex individuals, refugees, and internally displaced persons.

For her 2009 David Astor Award programme, she was attached to the Mail & Guardian in South Africa for three months, working in Johannesburg and Cape Town.

She was raised in Sololo, a remote village on the Kenyan border with Ethiopia.  Her first real exposure to newspapers and television on a visit to Nairobi in 1999 sparked her interest in pursuing a career in journalism.

After completing high school, she enrolled for a basic journalism course at Magenta Training Institute in Nairobi, and did a short internship at the Kenya News Agency in Mombasa.

She joined the Daily Nation in 2003 as a general news reporter but soon found her niche specialising in court and legal reporting.  In June 2011, she joined The Star as Chief Court Reporter.
